Knee bursitis is an inflammation of the bursae, the small fluid-filled sacs that cushion the knee joint. These bursae help reduce friction between bones, tendons, muscles, and skin. When inflamed, bursae can cause significant pain and restrict movement. Knee bursitis can affect the prepatellar, infrapatellar, or pes anserine bursae, each located in different parts of the knee. This condition is often seen in athletes or individuals whose activities involve repetitive knee motions or prolonged kneeling.
