Michigan’s No-Fault auto insurance system ensures that if you’re injured in a car accident, your own insurance (Personal Injury Protection, or PIP) will pay for your medical care regardless of who was at fault. Understanding your PIP benefits is key to accessing all the care you need. Here’s what you should know:
Michigan’s no-fault PIP is designed to be comprehensive. It even covers mileage to and from medical appointments (known as medical mileage), and in cases of catastrophic injury, it can fund home or vehicle modifications (for example, making a home wheelchair-accessible).
Your auto insurance’s PIP is there to pay for your accident-related medical care and support needs, so you can recover without financial barriers.
One of the most important factors in your no-fault coverage is whether you have unlimited PIP or a limited dollar amount. Michigan’s auto insurance law changed in 2020, allowing drivers to choose different levels of medical coverage:
How Limited PIP Affects Long-Term Care: If you have a lower PIP limit and suffer a serious injury, you might run out of coverage while still needing treatment. In such cases, you would need to rely on other resources to pay for ongoing care. This could include your health insurance (if you have it), Medicaid/Medicare, or potentially pursuing a claim against an at-fault driver for excess medical expenses. We understand this scenario can be stressful – but rest assured, Synergy Health Partners will not abandon you if your PIP benefits max out. We will work with you to transition billing to your health insurance or explore other options so you can continue necessary treatment. Our team is very familiar with the documentation required for extended care and, if needed, we can coordinate with your legal counsel by providing medical reports to support any claims for additional coverage.
Did You Opt-Out or Have Limited PIP by Choice? Michigan allows certain individuals to opt out of PIP medical coverage entirely (for example, if you have Medicare and chose No PIP option, or if you’re on Medicaid and chose a $50,000 limited PIP). In these cases, your health insurance becomes the primary payer for your auto injury treatments from day one. It’s especially important to let your healthcare providers know if you have opted-out or limited PIP coverage so they can bill the correct insurer. We have an Insurance Coordination Team that will verify your coverage elections and make sure billing is handled correctly according to your policy.
Dealing with insurance after an accident can be confusing. Our staff at Synergy Health Partners is here to handle the insurance paperwork so you don’t have to. We proactively coordinate between your auto insurance PIP and any health insurance you have, to make sure your treatment is covered with minimal hassle or out-of-pocket cost to you.
When you become our patient, we’ll gather your auto insurance details and health insurance information. We verify your PIP coverage – checking your coverage limit or if you have unlimited PIP – and determine if any exclusions or other insurers are involved. If your auto insurance has limits (e.g. $250k cap) or if you opted-out with qualifying health coverage, we’ll confirm how your health insurance can step in. Typically, if PIP is available, it is the primary payer for auto injury care, and your health insurance is secondary (it might only be used after PIP limits are exhausted, or for services PIP doesn’t cover).
Our billing specialists will submit claims to the appropriate insurance at each stage of your care. For example: if you need an MRI and some physical therapy, those bills go to your auto insurer first. If you had chosen limited PIP and it gets used up, we will then start billing your health insurance for subsequent services. We also handle any required pre-authorizations with your insurers for procedures like surgeries or injections – making sure there are no surprises. Our goal is to ensure a smooth payment process so you can focus on recovery instead of paperwork.
In many cases, PIP will cover 100% of allowed medical expenses. If your health insurance becomes involved, you might be responsible for your normal health plan copays or deductibles (since health insurance cost-sharing can apply once they are paying). However, often the most expensive portions of care occur early (hospital, surgery) and are covered by PIP. If there are any bills, our team can help you understand them. We can also connect you with resources if you need help with out-of-pocket costs or if you’re considering legal action to recover costs from an at-fault driver for medical bills beyond PIP coverage.
Not sure what your auto policy covers? We offer a free Insurance Benefit Verification for auto accident patients. Before you even start treatment, we can contact your insurer to confirm your PIP coverage level and remaining benefits, and we’ll review your health insurance for any applicable benefits. This gives you clarity from the start about what will be covered. We’ll explain the findings to you in plain language and answer any questions. We believe peace of mind about coverage is part of caring for our patients.
Michigan’s no-fault law not only covers medical bills but also provides for certain extra benefits that can be a lifeline after an accident. We make sure our patients know about these benefits and we help coordinate the necessary documentation so you receive everything you’re entitled to under your policy:
By knowing about attendant care and replacement services, you can recover more comfortably. Many patients aren’t aware their policy will pay for these supportive services – we make it a point to inform you and assist with the process so you get the full benefits of Michigan’s no-fault protections. Healing from an injury is hard work; these benefits exist to ease the burden on you and your family.
If you’re injured in a car accident but don’t have auto insurance—or were a pedestrian or bicyclist without coverage—the MACP may help. This state-run program assigns an insurer to provide PIP benefits when no applicable policy exists. While coverage is capped at $250,000 per person, it can still cover medical bills, rehab, and other essential expenses. Exceptions apply for uninsured vehicle owners/drivers, so legal guidance may be needed.
Our office can assist you if we suspect your case falls under the Assigned Claims Plan. There is an application that needs to be submitted to the MACP (managed by the Michigan Automobile Insurance Placement Facility). It requires details of the accident and affidavits that no coverage exists. Once approved, an insurer will be assigned and you’ll get a claim number to use just like regular insurance. We have experience helping patients through this process – from obtaining and filing the forms to following up on claim status.
If you’re worried because you have no insurance, please know we will still treat you. We’ll work with the Assigned Claims Plan to secure payment for your care whenever possible. You shouldn’t be denied treatment just because of an insurance gap. Michigan’s no-fault system is complex, but we understand its channels. Whether you’re covered by your own policy or need to use the MACP, Synergy Health Partners will guide you every step of the way so that your medical bills get covered and you can focus on recovery.
In 2019, Michigan introduced a medical fee schedule for auto insurance claims as part of no-fault reform. This fee schedule took effect for accident-related treatment after July 2021. What does this mean for you as a patient? In simple terms, the law now limits how much medical providers can charge for services to auto accident patients, based on a percentage of what Medicare would pay for the same service. Providers are required to accept the fee schedule amount as payment in full – any charge beyond that amount will not be paid by insurance.
At Synergy Health Partners, we fully comply with this fee schedule—meaning no surprise bills. For example, if a procedure typically costs $1,000 but the fee schedule allows $800, that’s the maximum you’ll be charged. You’ll never be balance-billed for the difference, as the law prohibits it. Our integrated care model allows us to provide imaging, surgery, and therapy in-house, reducing the need for costly external referrals while staying within the fee limits. This approach helps us deliver high-quality, cost-effective care without compromising on service. If you have questions about a procedure or what your insurance covers, our billing team is here to help. In rare cases where the fee schedule may not fully cover a specialized treatment, we’ll discuss options with you upfront—ensuring you’re always informed and in control.
At Synergy Health Partners, our priority is delivering the care you need at a fair, covered cost—giving you peace of mind throughout your recovery.
