Tips for Optimum Joint Health

Your joints are a very important part of your body. As you age, your joints can become stiffer and less flexible due to lack of lubrication and thinner cartilage. How can you keep your joints at optimum health as you age? Here are some tips for optimum joint health:

Choose your foods carefully.

What you eat has an impact on joint health. For example, studies show that the more low- or fat-free milk women drank, the slower their progression of knee osteoarthritis was. Other foods that can help are olive oil, fatty fishes like salmon (here are some healthy, yummy recipes), and tart cherry juice, which helps reduce inflammation (make sure you read the label and don’t purchase cherry juice with added sugar). Foods to avoid: cheese, sugary sodas, bacon, and goodies with trans fat, which causes both inflammation and weight gain.

Watch your weight.

Extra weight puts a strain on your joints and if you lose weight, you can help improve joint pain. The lower half of your body, especially your knees and hips, bear most of your weight load. That’s why excess weight can cause your joints to ache and swell and can contribute to even full-blown osteoarthritis. Talk to your doctor about a sensible and healthy weight loss plan to help your joints get relief.

Exercise!

Do you have 22 minutes a day you can devote to exercise? That’s all you need to impact your health in a positive way. Choose an exercise you love so you’ll stick with it and will see that long-term impact. Consult a trusted physician before beginning any exercise program, particularly if you have had an injury.
