Learn more about your shoulder pain and how to treat it

The initial reaction to shoulder pain, at least when it’s non-traumatic, is often to take it easy and rest the area where several joints combine with tendons and muscles to allow a wide range of arm movements.

The Mendelson Kornblum orthopedic staff believes that’s a sound response, but we encourage people to not ignore the pain if it persists at any level. Suffering through a shoulder injury likely only makes the problem worse and has a profound impact on your quality of life.

Early detection will allow specialists to address the pain more quickly and allow you to feel your best.

What can I expect at the doctor’s office?

Orthopedic surgeons will review of your medical history and conduct a full examination to determine what is causing your pain. The specialist will look for physical abnormalities, swelling, deformity or muscle weakness as well as feeling for tender areas. It will be important to observe the range of shoulder motion, how far and in which direction you can move your arm.

The exam could include:

· X-rays

· MRI

· Myelography/CT scanning

· Electrodiagnostic studies

Diagnosis and treatment

Once the cause and source of your pain is determined, the focus will turn to how to most effectively treat your injury. Doctors will likely begin by recommending the least invasive method and then progress if your body is not responding. These are the four methods most often advised by our doctors:

· More rest and altering activities

· Anti-inflammatory medication or steroid injections

· Physical therapy to build strength

· Surgical options

Understanding your pain, getting the proper diagnosis and having a specialized treatment plan are the first steps on your road to recovery.
