Non-Surgical Treatments

Start With the Least-Invasive Options

Most patients improve without surgery. Our team takes a conservative-first approach with treatments designed to reduce pain, improve strength, and prevent future flare-ups.

Non-Surgical Hand & Wrist Treatments

  • Hand Therapy and Splinting Our certified hand therapists design custom splints and exercise programs to support your thumb joint and improve function. Many patients experience significant pain relief and improved grip strength with consistent therapy.
    • Custom thumb spica splints for joint protection
    • Strengthening exercises for surrounding muscles
  • Anti-Inflammatory Medications Targeted medications help reduce inflammation and pain in the thumb joint. Our physicians work with you to find the most effective approach while minimizing side effects.
    • Oral NSAIDs for pain and inflammation control
    • Topical anti-inflammatory preparations
  • Corticosteroid Injections Precise injections into the CMC joint can provide months of pain relief and improved function. Our specialists use ultrasound guidance for accurate placement and maximum effectiveness.
    • Ultrasound-guided joint injections
    • Long-acting corticosteroid formulations
  • Activity Modification Our occupational therapists help you adapt daily activities to reduce thumb stress while maintaining independence. Simple modifications can significantly improve your quality of life.
    • Ergonomic tools and adaptive equipment
    • Joint protection techniques for daily tasks

Surgical Hand & Wrist Procedures

  • LRTI (Ligament Reconstruction Tendon Interposition) This proven procedure removes the damaged trapezium bone and reconstructs the joint using your own tendon tissue. LRTI provides excellent long-term pain relief and functional improvement for most patients.
  • CMC Joint Replacement Advanced implant technology allows us to replace the damaged joint surfaces while preserving bone structure. This option may provide faster recovery and maintained joint motion for appropriate candidates.
  • Arthrodesis (Joint Fusion) For severe arthritis or failed previous surgery, joint fusion eliminates pain by permanently joining the bones. While motion is limited, grip strength and stability are often significantly improved.
  • Arthroscopic Debridement Minimally invasive arthroscopic techniques allow us to clean damaged cartilage and remove loose bodies through tiny incisions. This option works best for early-stage arthritis with mechanical symptoms.
Star
Over 90% of our CMC arthroplasty patients report significant pain improvement and return to most daily activities within 3-4 months of surgery.

What Patients Say

RW
Excellent care and concern from the time I was called into the room. He thoroughly explained my injury and what my options were. My best option was surgery which he performed 5 days later. He greeted me at the surgery center and explained the procedure that was going to take place. Surgery went well. Im on my way to a full recovery and very thankful to have crossed paths with Dr. Bohm and to have him for my care during this time. Also, the entire staff from my initial checkin to scheduling to follow-up care were all courteous, professional, and on point. Such a well organized team.
