Your Treatment Options for Toe Arthroplasty

At Synergy Health Partners, we offer comprehensive treatment for toe joint arthritis and deformities. Our team begins with conservative approaches and progresses to surgical options when needed to restore your quality of life.
  • Fellowship-trained podiatric surgeons specializing in foot and ankle reconstruction
  • Latest implant technology for improved joint function and longevity
  • Comprehensive rehabilitation with our in-house physical therapy team
  • Coordinated care from diagnosis through complete recovery

Non-Surgical Treatments

Start With the Least-Invasive Options

Most patients improve without surgery. Our team takes a conservative-first approach with treatments designed to reduce pain, improve strength, and prevent future flare-ups.

Non-Surgical Foot & Ankle Treatments

  • Custom Orthotics and Footwear Modifications Specially designed shoe inserts and footwear modifications can reduce pressure on arthritic toe joints and improve alignment. Our podiatrists work with certified orthotists to create devices tailored to your specific foot structure and activity level.
    • Custom-molded toe spacers and padding
    • Rocker-bottom shoe modifications
  • Joint Injections Corticosteroid or hyaluronic acid injections can provide significant pain relief and reduce inflammation in arthritic toe joints. These minimally invasive treatments can delay the need for surgery and improve your daily function.
    • Ultrasound-guided precision injections
    • Hyaluronic acid for joint lubrication
  • Physical Therapy Targeted exercises and manual therapy techniques help maintain toe joint flexibility and strengthen surrounding muscles. Our physical therapists design programs to reduce stiffness and improve your gait mechanics.
    • Joint mobilization techniques
    • Strengthening exercises for intrinsic foot muscles
  • Anti-Inflammatory Medications Prescription or over-the-counter medications can help manage pain and reduce joint inflammation. Our physicians carefully monitor your response and adjust treatments to minimize side effects while maximizing relief.
    • Topical anti-inflammatory creams
    • Oral NSAIDs with gastric protection when appropriate

Many patients experience significant pain relief and improved mobility within 4-6 weeks of starting their comprehensive non-surgical treatment plan.

Surgical Foot & Ankle Procedures

  • Total Toe Joint Replacement (Arthroplasty) Complete replacement of the damaged joint with a prosthetic implant designed to restore natural toe movement. This procedure is ideal for patients with severe arthritis who want to maintain joint flexibility and avoid fusion.
  • Silicone Implant Arthroplasty A flexible silicone spacer is placed between the toe bones to maintain joint space and provide cushioning. This option works well for patients with moderate joint damage who need pain relief while preserving some natural movement.
  • Minimally Invasive Joint Resurfacing Advanced techniques allow our surgeons to reshape damaged joint surfaces through smaller incisions, preserving healthy bone and soft tissue. This approach often results in faster healing and reduced post-operative discomfort.
Star
Over 88% of our toe arthroplasty patients report significant pain improvement and return to normal walking within 8-12 weeks.

What to Expect with Toe Arthroplasty

1

Comprehensive Evaluation

Your podiatric surgeon will review your medical history, perform a thorough examination, and order imaging studies to determine if you're a candidate for toe arthroplasty.

2

Pre-Surgical Planning

We'll discuss surgical options, review implant choices, and coordinate with our anesthesia team to ensure your procedure is tailored to your specific needs and health status.

3

Outpatient Surgery

The procedure is typically performed in our state-of-the-art ambulatory surgery center under local anesthesia with sedation, allowing you to return home the same day.

4

Recovery and Rehabilitation

You'll work with our physical therapy team to regain strength and mobility, with most patients transitioning to regular shoes within 6-8 weeks post-surgery.

5

Long-term Follow-up

Regular check-ups ensure your implant is functioning properly and help us address any concerns as you return to your desired activity level.

What Patients Say

EP
I had two bunions surgically removed . My first-foot surgery was in August of 2017. It took about 6 weeks to heel halfway and then I had my second foot surgery done. Dr. Randy Leff is an exceptional Surgeon. The recuperation time Was faster than I expected. The office staff is fantastic and extremely helpful. They called and made sure I was doing alright after both surgeries. Dr. Randy Leff made me feel comfortable. I recommend Dr Leff to anyone that is thinking to have this procedure.

Dr. Sorenson is very efficient. Spends a lot of time and explains everything thoroughly. Never seems to be in a hurry. He did surgery on me and did not push me into it. He explained it to me and told me to go home and think about it and if I decided to go ahead with the surgery to come back . I would definitely recommend him . As a matter of fact I already have.

My first visit with Dr. Klein was very appreciated. He spent time with my concerns related to my left foot drop condition. Dr. Klein kindly saw me in his Livonia office earlier than the appointment I'd made with him in his Warren office... saving me a long road trip. After prescribing an over-the-shoe brace, I was fitted with it right there and walked out with it! I look forward to my next visit, as the brace seems to be helping me walk straighter. I feel a bit more balanced and secure with my walker. Thank-you, Dr. Klein:)

I came across this facility after looking up reviews for podiatrists on google. The 5 and 4 stars rating it has speaks volume. Exceptional facility. Pleasant and friendly staff and the doctor I have is wonderful so far. The first appointment is a consult. I arrived about 5-10min early for my appointment and only waited a couple of minutes until they called my name! That alone is a wow factor! The medical assistant immediately came into my room and went over my information and added anything that was needed. Maybe like 5-7 min later the doctor (Dr.Kevin Sorensen)came in to see me. I did not feel rushed at all. He was very easy to talk to and genuinely wanted to know my complaints & concerns. He then ordered xrays which they do on-site ! Once he received the results he talked to me again. Explaining what needed to be done to correct my problem. I was in and out in about 45min. That's with talking to the medical assistant , speaking with the doctor, doing xrays, and speaking to the doctor again! Wow! The next appointment was for consent. Signing a few forms before my surgery date. The doctor explained in detail the procedure and what was going to happen and also answering any questions before I signed anything. In fact he wanted me to ask questions! I am so happy I found them. The facility is very clean and the staff are very pleasant and the doctor is amazing. If I could give more than 5 stars I would! Well worth my drive of 90min. Very satisfied. My surgery is tomorrow and I have no worries and feel confident about my decision to have it done. Highly Highly recommend this wonderful place!!!

Dr Randy Leff did my foot surgery for a painful neuroma (he shortened two metatarsals and removed the neuroma). I had zero pain after the surgery, and the sutures are beautiful too! I'm now having post-op laser treatments with Karen RN who is very knowledgeable and so kind. It's done right in the office so it's super convenient, and it really helps with post-op healing (reduces scar tissue and inflammation). MichFoot treats every patient with courtesy and respect, and value everyone's time as much as their own. The office staff is pleasant and very accommodating with appointment times. The office is conveniently located with easy access and ample parking. I've sent family members and several friends to Dr Leff for everything from plantar fasciitis, bunions, neuropathy/neuromas to trimming my 90 year old mother's toenails. Everyone I've sent to Dr Leff has been very pleased. I'm an RN so I am acutely aware of the importance of having a great doctor. I highly recommend Dr Randy Leff and MichFoot.

Dr. Leff's office is wonderful from the minute one enters the building. His kind and compassionate office staff are knowledgeable and helpful. My two young children had to have procedures done, and Dr. Leff's incredibly patient, brilliant bedside manner was so appreciated. Most importantly, he took the time to educate us about the procedure and the problem and took care of it quickly, painlessly and even with some humor! Thank you Dr. Leff and staff for such a wonderful office.
