Non-Surgical Treatments

Start With the Least-Invasive Options

Most patients improve without surgery. Our team takes a conservative-first approach with treatments designed to reduce pain, improve strength, and prevent future flare-ups.

Non-Surgical Foot & Ankle Treatments

  • Physical Therapy Our specialized physical therapists develop customized exercise programs to improve ankle strength, flexibility, and stability. These targeted treatments can often resolve ankle pain and dysfunction without surgery.
    • Range of motion exercises
    • Strength training and balance work
  • Anti-Inflammatory Medications Prescription and over-the-counter medications can effectively reduce ankle joint inflammation and pain. Our physicians carefully monitor your response to optimize pain relief while minimizing side effects.
    • NSAIDs for inflammation control
    • Topical pain relief applications
  • Corticosteroid Injections Targeted steroid injections directly into the ankle joint can provide significant pain relief and reduce inflammation. These injections are performed using imaging guidance for precise placement and maximum effectiveness.
    • Image-guided injection techniques
    • Long-lasting inflammation reduction
  • Bracing and Immobilization Custom ankle braces and supportive devices can help stabilize the joint, reduce pain, and prevent further injury. Our orthotists work with you to find the most comfortable and effective solution.
    • Custom-fitted ankle braces
    • Activity-specific support devices
  • Activity Modification Our team helps you identify and modify activities that may be aggravating your ankle condition. This approach allows healing while maintaining your fitness and lifestyle goals through alternative exercises.
    • Low-impact exercise alternatives
    • Gradual return-to-activity protocols

Surgical Foot & Ankle Procedures

  • Diagnostic Ankle Arthroscopy When imaging studies are inconclusive, diagnostic arthroscopy provides direct visualization of the ankle joint. This minimally invasive procedure allows our surgeons to accurately diagnose complex ankle conditions and develop the most appropriate treatment plan.
  • Ankle Debridement Arthroscopic removal of damaged cartilage, bone spurs, or inflamed tissue helps restore normal ankle joint function. This procedure is highly effective for treating ankle impingement and early-stage arthritis with minimal recovery time.
  • Loose Body Removal Small fragments of bone or cartilage can cause significant ankle pain and locking. Arthroscopic removal of these loose bodies provides immediate relief and prevents further joint damage.
  • Ankle Ligament Repair Torn or damaged ankle ligaments can be repaired arthroscopically using advanced suture techniques. This approach maintains ankle stability while preserving natural joint mechanics and reducing recovery time compared to open procedures.
Star
Over 92% of our ankle arthroscopy patients report significant pain improvement and return to their desired activity level within 8-12 weeks.

What to Expect with Ankle Arthroscopy

1

Initial Consultation

Your orthopedic surgeon will evaluate your ankle, review imaging studies, and discuss whether arthroscopy is the best treatment option for your condition.

2

Pre-Surgical Planning

We'll schedule your procedure at one of our ambulatory surgery centers and provide detailed pre-operative instructions, including any necessary medical clearances.

3

Day of Surgery

The arthroscopic procedure typically takes 45-90 minutes and is performed as an outpatient procedure. You'll go home the same day with detailed recovery instructions.

4

Early Recovery

The first 1-2 weeks focus on managing swelling, protecting the ankle, and beginning gentle range of motion exercises as directed by your surgeon.

5

Rehabilitation Phase

Our physical therapy team guides you through a progressive rehabilitation program, typically lasting 6-12 weeks, to restore full ankle function and strength.

What Patients Say

EP
I had two bunions surgically removed . My first-foot surgery was in August of 2017. It took about 6 weeks to heel halfway and then I had my second foot surgery done. Dr. Randy Leff is an exceptional Surgeon. The recuperation time Was faster than I expected. The office staff is fantastic and extremely helpful. They called and made sure I was doing alright after both surgeries. Dr. Randy Leff made me feel comfortable. I recommend Dr Leff to anyone that is thinking to have this procedure.

Dr. Sorenson is very efficient. Spends a lot of time and explains everything thoroughly. Never seems to be in a hurry. He did surgery on me and did not push me into it. He explained it to me and told me to go home and think about it and if I decided to go ahead with the surgery to come back . I would definitely recommend him . As a matter of fact I already have.

My first visit with Dr. Klein was very appreciated. He spent time with my concerns related to my left foot drop condition. Dr. Klein kindly saw me in his Livonia office earlier than the appointment I'd made with him in his Warren office... saving me a long road trip. After prescribing an over-the-shoe brace, I was fitted with it right there and walked out with it! I look forward to my next visit, as the brace seems to be helping me walk straighter. I feel a bit more balanced and secure with my walker. Thank-you, Dr. Klein:)

I came across this facility after looking up reviews for podiatrists on google. The 5 and 4 stars rating it has speaks volume. Exceptional facility. Pleasant and friendly staff and the doctor I have is wonderful so far. The first appointment is a consult. I arrived about 5-10min early for my appointment and only waited a couple of minutes until they called my name! That alone is a wow factor! The medical assistant immediately came into my room and went over my information and added anything that was needed. Maybe like 5-7 min later the doctor (Dr.Kevin Sorensen)came in to see me. I did not feel rushed at all. He was very easy to talk to and genuinely wanted to know my complaints & concerns. He then ordered xrays which they do on-site ! Once he received the results he talked to me again. Explaining what needed to be done to correct my problem. I was in and out in about 45min. That's with talking to the medical assistant , speaking with the doctor, doing xrays, and speaking to the doctor again! Wow! The next appointment was for consent. Signing a few forms before my surgery date. The doctor explained in detail the procedure and what was going to happen and also answering any questions before I signed anything. In fact he wanted me to ask questions! I am so happy I found them. The facility is very clean and the staff are very pleasant and the doctor is amazing. If I could give more than 5 stars I would! Well worth my drive of 90min. Very satisfied. My surgery is tomorrow and I have no worries and feel confident about my decision to have it done. Highly Highly recommend this wonderful place!!!

Dr Randy Leff did my foot surgery for a painful neuroma (he shortened two metatarsals and removed the neuroma). I had zero pain after the surgery, and the sutures are beautiful too! I'm now having post-op laser treatments with Karen RN who is very knowledgeable and so kind. It's done right in the office so it's super convenient, and it really helps with post-op healing (reduces scar tissue and inflammation). MichFoot treats every patient with courtesy and respect, and value everyone's time as much as their own. The office staff is pleasant and very accommodating with appointment times. The office is conveniently located with easy access and ample parking. I've sent family members and several friends to Dr Leff for everything from plantar fasciitis, bunions, neuropathy/neuromas to trimming my 90 year old mother's toenails. Everyone I've sent to Dr Leff has been very pleased. I'm an RN so I am acutely aware of the importance of having a great doctor. I highly recommend Dr Randy Leff and MichFoot.

Dr. Leff's office is wonderful from the minute one enters the building. His kind and compassionate office staff are knowledgeable and helpful. My two young children had to have procedures done, and Dr. Leff's incredibly patient, brilliant bedside manner was so appreciated. Most importantly, he took the time to educate us about the procedure and the problem and took care of it quickly, painlessly and even with some humor! Thank you Dr. Leff and staff for such a wonderful office.
