Your Treatment Options for Achilles Tendon Repair

We'll work with you to determine the best path forward based on your injury severity, activity level, and recovery goals.
  • Fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons specializing in foot and ankle conditions
  • Advanced minimally invasive surgical techniques when surgery is needed
  • Comprehensive physical therapy and rehabilitation programs on-site
  • Personalized treatment plans tailored to your lifestyle and recovery goals

Non-Surgical Treatments

Start With the Least-Invasive Options

Most patients improve without surgery. Our team takes a conservative-first approach with treatments designed to reduce pain, improve strength, and prevent future flare-ups.

Non-Surgical Foot & Ankle Treatments

  • Immobilization and Bracing For partial tears or minor injuries, controlled rest with specialized boots or casts allows the tendon to heal naturally. Our orthotists work with you to ensure proper positioning and gradual return to weight-bearing activities.
    • Custom walking boots and protective bracing
    • Progressive weight-bearing protocols
  • Physical Therapy Our experienced physical therapists design comprehensive rehabilitation programs to restore strength, flexibility, and function to your Achilles tendon. Treatment focuses on eccentric strengthening and gradual activity progression.
    • Eccentric strengthening exercises
    • Gait training and biomechanical correction
  • Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy This regenerative treatment uses your body's own healing factors to accelerate tendon repair. PRP injections can be particularly effective for chronic Achilles tendinopathy and partial tears.
    • Concentrated growth factors from your blood
    • Minimally invasive outpatient procedure
  • Shockwave Therapy Extracorporeal shockwave therapy stimulates blood flow and promotes healing in chronic Achilles tendon conditions. This non-invasive treatment can help break down scar tissue and encourage new tissue growth.
    • Non-invasive acoustic wave treatment
    • Promotes natural healing response
  • Activity Modification and Biomechanical Training Our sports medicine specialists help identify contributing factors to your Achilles problems and develop strategies to prevent re-injury. This includes gait analysis, footwear recommendations, and training modifications.
    • Comprehensive gait and movement analysis
    • Customized return-to-sport protocols

Surgical Options

Foot & Ankle Surgical Treatments

See how our fellowship-trained surgeons perform minimally invasive Achilles tendon repair using advanced techniques.

Surgical Foot & Ankle Procedures

  • Minimally Invasive Achilles Repair Using small incisions and advanced suturing techniques, we can repair acute Achilles ruptures while minimizing tissue damage and scarring. This approach typically results in faster healing and reduced complications compared to open surgery.
  • Open Achilles Tendon Repair For complex ruptures or cases where tissue quality is compromised, traditional open repair provides direct visualization and secure reconstruction of the tendon. Our surgeons use the latest suturing techniques to optimize healing and strength.
  • Achilles Tendon Reconstruction with Graft When the Achilles tendon cannot be directly repaired due to chronic degeneration or extensive damage, we perform reconstruction using tendon grafts. This procedure restores function and strength for patients with severe tendon loss.
  • Gastrocnemius Recession For patients with chronic Achilles problems related to tight calf muscles, this procedure releases tension on the Achilles tendon by lengthening the gastrocnemius muscle. This can be combined with tendon repair when needed.
Star
Over 92% of our patients who undergo Achilles tendon repair surgery return to their previous activity level within 4-6 months of surgery.

What Patients Say

EP
I had two bunions surgically removed . My first-foot surgery was in August of 2017. It took about 6 weeks to heel halfway and then I had my second foot surgery done. Dr. Randy Leff is an exceptional Surgeon. The recuperation time Was faster than I expected. The office staff is fantastic and extremely helpful. They called and made sure I was doing alright after both surgeries. Dr. Randy Leff made me feel comfortable. I recommend Dr Leff to anyone that is thinking to have this procedure.

Dr. Sorenson is very efficient. Spends a lot of time and explains everything thoroughly. Never seems to be in a hurry. He did surgery on me and did not push me into it. He explained it to me and told me to go home and think about it and if I decided to go ahead with the surgery to come back . I would definitely recommend him . As a matter of fact I already have.

My first visit with Dr. Klein was very appreciated. He spent time with my concerns related to my left foot drop condition. Dr. Klein kindly saw me in his Livonia office earlier than the appointment I'd made with him in his Warren office... saving me a long road trip. After prescribing an over-the-shoe brace, I was fitted with it right there and walked out with it! I look forward to my next visit, as the brace seems to be helping me walk straighter. I feel a bit more balanced and secure with my walker. Thank-you, Dr. Klein:)

I came across this facility after looking up reviews for podiatrists on google. The 5 and 4 stars rating it has speaks volume. Exceptional facility. Pleasant and friendly staff and the doctor I have is wonderful so far. The first appointment is a consult. I arrived about 5-10min early for my appointment and only waited a couple of minutes until they called my name! That alone is a wow factor! The medical assistant immediately came into my room and went over my information and added anything that was needed. Maybe like 5-7 min later the doctor (Dr.Kevin Sorensen)came in to see me. I did not feel rushed at all. He was very easy to talk to and genuinely wanted to know my complaints & concerns. He then ordered xrays which they do on-site ! Once he received the results he talked to me again. Explaining what needed to be done to correct my problem. I was in and out in about 45min. That's with talking to the medical assistant , speaking with the doctor, doing xrays, and speaking to the doctor again! Wow! The next appointment was for consent. Signing a few forms before my surgery date. The doctor explained in detail the procedure and what was going to happen and also answering any questions before I signed anything. In fact he wanted me to ask questions! I am so happy I found them. The facility is very clean and the staff are very pleasant and the doctor is amazing. If I could give more than 5 stars I would! Well worth my drive of 90min. Very satisfied. My surgery is tomorrow and I have no worries and feel confident about my decision to have it done. Highly Highly recommend this wonderful place!!!

Dr Randy Leff did my foot surgery for a painful neuroma (he shortened two metatarsals and removed the neuroma). I had zero pain after the surgery, and the sutures are beautiful too! I'm now having post-op laser treatments with Karen RN who is very knowledgeable and so kind. It's done right in the office so it's super convenient, and it really helps with post-op healing (reduces scar tissue and inflammation). MichFoot treats every patient with courtesy and respect, and value everyone's time as much as their own. The office staff is pleasant and very accommodating with appointment times. The office is conveniently located with easy access and ample parking. I've sent family members and several friends to Dr Leff for everything from plantar fasciitis, bunions, neuropathy/neuromas to trimming my 90 year old mother's toenails. Everyone I've sent to Dr Leff has been very pleased. I'm an RN so I am acutely aware of the importance of having a great doctor. I highly recommend Dr Randy Leff and MichFoot.

Dr. Leff's office is wonderful from the minute one enters the building. His kind and compassionate office staff are knowledgeable and helpful. My two young children had to have procedures done, and Dr. Leff's incredibly patient, brilliant bedside manner was so appreciated. Most importantly, he took the time to educate us about the procedure and the problem and took care of it quickly, painlessly and even with some humor! Thank you Dr. Leff and staff for such a wonderful office.
