Lumbar Laminectomy

Lumbar laminectomy creates more space for compressed nerves in the lower back, often relieving leg pain and walking limitations from spinal stenosis without requiring fusion. When the spine is stable, decompression alone is frequently all that is needed.

Decompression without fusion when appropriate. A spine surgeon's evaluation tells you which.

Schedule Your Spine Consultation

If walking distance is shrinking or leg pain is making everyday activities harder, an evaluation can determine whether decompression is the right next step.

Your Path to Lumbar Decompression at Synergy Health Partners

Most patients with lumbar stenosis or nerve compression do not need surgery right away. At Synergy Health Partners, lumbar laminectomy is considered when conservative care is no longer providing meaningful relief and a spine surgeon confirms that decompression, often without fusion, is the right path. Our integrated team brings imaging, pain management, physical therapy, and surgical expertise together so the decision is made with the full picture.
  • Fellowship-trained spine surgeons who carefully distinguish decompression from fusion
  • On-site MRI and flexion-extension X-rays to confirm nerve compression and spine stability
  • In-house pain management for conservative care before surgery is considered
  • Coordinated post-surgical physical therapy at multiple Southeast Michigan locations

Non-Surgical Treatments

Start With the Least-Invasive Options

Most patients improve without surgery. Our team takes a conservative-first approach with treatments designed to reduce pain, improve strength, and prevent future flare-ups.

Non-Surgical Spine, Neck & Back Treatments

  • Start With the Least-Invasive Options Many patients with lumbar stenosis improve enough with non-surgical care that decompression surgery is never needed. Our team treats the underlying inflammation, strengthens the supporting muscles, and monitors function before surgery enters the conversation.
    • Core strengthening and spinal stabilization exercises
    • Manual therapy and soft tissue mobilization
  • Physical Therapy and Core Strengthening Specialized spine physical therapists use targeted exercises and manual therapy to strengthen the core, improve spinal stability, and reduce pressure on compressed nerves. For many patients with mild to moderate stenosis, this is the foundation of long-term function.
    • Core strengthening and spinal stabilization exercises
    • Manual therapy and soft-tissue mobilization
  • Epidural Steroid Injections Image-guided lumbar epidural steroid injections deliver anti-inflammatory medication directly to the nerve roots affected by stenosis. These minimally invasive procedures are performed by board-certified pain management specialists and can provide meaningful relief while patients work on physical therapy.
    • Lumbar epidural steroid injections
    • Caudal epidural steroid injections
  • Anti-Inflammatory Medication Management A customized medication strategy can help control nerve-related pain and inflammation while non-surgical care is underway. Our in-house pharmacy ensures convenient access to prescribed medications with expert consultation from our pain management team.
    • Anti-inflammatory medications
    • Neuropathic pain medications
  • Activity Modification and Posture Education Learning how to move, lift, and sit in ways that reduce pressure on the lumbar spine can significantly improve symptoms and prevent flare-ups. Our team provides comprehensive education on body mechanics, ergonomics, and lifestyle adjustments that support long-term spine health.
    • Workplace ergonomic assessments
    • Home exercise program development

Many patients with lumbar stenosis see meaningful improvement in walking distance and leg symptoms within 8 to 12 weeks of starting comprehensive conservative care.

Surgical Spine, Neck & Back Procedures

  • Lumbar Laminectomy The standard decompression procedure for lumbar stenosis. The lamina, the back portion of the vertebra, is removed along with thickened ligament or bone spurs to give compressed nerves more room. When the spine is stable, this can be done without fusion, allowing for a faster recovery and preservation of motion at the treated level.
  • Minimally Invasive Lumbar Decompression A smaller-incision approach to decompression that preserves more of the surrounding muscle and tissue. Recovery times are typically faster, with less post-operative pain and earlier return to walking. Candidacy depends on the anatomy and severity of compression.
  • Lumbar Laminotomy A more limited bone removal than a full laminectomy, used when decompression at a single level or smaller area is sufficient. Often considered for focal nerve compression, such as a contained disc herniation or localized foraminal narrowing.
  • Laminectomy with Lumbar Fusion When decompression alone would leave the spine unstable, often in cases of spondylolisthesis, deformity, or significant motion-related back pain, fusion is added to provide stability. Fusion is not added simply because the MRI shows stenosis. The decision is made based on imaging, exam findings, and your symptoms together. [link to: ALIF page] and [link to: Prone Lateral Interbody Fusion page] cover the lumbar fusion approaches Synergy uses when fusion is the right call.

When decompression matches the diagnosis and the spine is stable, most patients see significant improvement in leg pain and walking distance within 8 to 12 weeks of surgery.

What Patients Say

SP
My father had spine surgery with Dr. Munk and was happy with the results. Dr Munk has always been very helpful, courteous and compassionate towards both my father and myself. These reviews must be a small handful out of 1000's. I'm in need of shoulder surgery myself now and if Dr. Munk could do, I wouldn't hesitate for a moment. He's a wonderful doctor. My father thinks he's a rock star!

I've been to Dr. Kornblum for lower back surgery and Dr. Munk for SI Joint surgeries and I've always been treated very well. Both were very professional and up front about everything that I was dealing with, and what to expect. No false hope. But most of all, they were both very easy to talk to about any concerns that I had. I'm very grateful that they were able to help me the way they did. I've never had any issues with Mendelson/Kornblum in Livonia. Whether it's billing, appointments or checking in, or anything else, everyone's been friendly and helpful.
